PORT HAWKESBURY, NS:—His Honour The Honourable Mike Savage, ONS, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, annually presents the Lieutenant Governor’s Education Medal to selected Grade 11 students who have demonstrated qualities of leadership and service in the school and community; and commendable performance in the courses in which they are enrolled.

“I extend congratulations to the Strait Regional Centre for Education students who have been named recipients of the 2025-2026 Nova Scotia Lieutenant Governor’s Education Medal. Their many achievements are truly impressive, and this Medal is a well-deserved recognition of their significant accomplishments. Their determination in achieving their goals and commitment to serving their communities is inspiring. All of us in the Strait Regional Centre for Education are very proud of them,” said Paul Landry, Regional Executive Director for the Strait Regional Centre for Education.

“I also recognize with appreciation the support provided by the recipients’ families and teachers in helping to instill the value of service to others in students’ hearts and minds. The Lieutenant Governor’s Education Medal recipients are our leaders of today and tomorrow, and are making a significant and meaningful impact in our school communities,” added Mr. Landry.

At a ceremony held at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre this afternoon, His Honour The Honourable Mike Savage, ONS, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, presented the Lieutenant Governor’s Education Medal.

Cape Breton Highlands Education Centre/Academy

Briley Romard

Briley is a dedicated student who excels academically and is an active member of her school community. She has consistently maintained status as an honours student throughout her junior and senior years. In addition, Briley finds time to participate enthusiastically in multiple school sports and was the recipient of the School Sport Nova Scotia Ron O’Flaherty Scholar-Athlete Award in Grade 9.

In addition to her strong academic record, Briley devotes time as the editor of the school yearbook. She has also taken on leadership roles in various sports by mentoring younger students and helping them enhance their skill development. Briley is an ambassador with the Nova Scotia International Student Program, supporting international students and fostering the sharing of cultural diversity and experiences. In her downtime, she also works as a Nova Scotia Basketball official.

Chedabucto Education Centre/Guysborough Academy

Ainslee Connolly

Ainslee has continually displayed academic achievement, athletic excellence, and meaningful involvement in her school and community. She consistently goes above and beyond whether in the classroom, on the ice, or through community service while inspiring others to achieve their goals.

Ainslee has earned numerous academic awards for her top average while balancing her roles as a lifeguard, a Physically Active Children and Youth (PACY) leader and a member of the U18AAA Northern Subway Selects hockey team, where she has competed at a national level. She is an active member of the Student Council and is a leader with the school’s Special Olympics Unified Sports® Team. Ainslee’s athletic accomplishments include Most Valuable Player, Coach’s awards and Junior Female Athlete of the Year while also serving as captain on numerous teams. Her leadership roles have also included assistant coach of the Guysborough County United Youth soccer team as well as the school’s Junior Volleyball team. Ainslee volunteers at the Milford Haven Nursing Home and dedicates many hours to her home community of Guysborough. Congratulations, Ainslee!

Taylor Rayne Boudreau

Taylor has been actively involved in school life and in her community. She is a member of several school committees and sports teams all while maintaining strong academic standing. Taylor is an advocate for mental health awareness through her involvement with JACK.org and participates on the school’s Special Olympics Unified Sports® Team which focuses on inclusion and breaking down barriers for students with disabilities. She is a member of the Nova Scotia Youth Council Board and is actively involved with the Nova Scotia Secondary School Students’ Association (NSSSA) where she holds several leadership positions. Taylor was also involved in starting a Caring Closet at the school which provides necessities for students. She loves to pay it forward by coaching, refereeing, organizing community events, and has raised an impressive approximately $20,000 for the IWK through a walk-a-thon. Congratulations, Taylor!

Dalbrae Academy

Brett Daniel Gillies

Brett is an academically driven and ambitious student who excels across all subjects and takes great pride in his achievements. He has embraced numerous leadership opportunities, serving as an ambassador with the Nova Scotia International Student Program and as a Youth Facilitator for the Healthy Relationships for Youth Program. In addition, Brett is an active member of the Nova Scotia Secondary School Students’ Association.

Beyond the classroom, Brett is deeply engaged in his community. He has maintained consistent employment throughout his school years, beginning at the age of thirteen, demonstrating a strong work ethic and sense of responsibility. Brett also contributes as a member of the Community Health Board and, since June 2024, has served as a leadership facilitator at Camp Brigadoon, supporting children living with chronic illnesses.

Brett’s dedication, leadership, and commitment to both his academic and community pursuits set him apart as a well-rounded and inspiring young individual. Congratulations, Brett!

Zoey Christena Marie Gallant

A strong leader demonstrates resilience, empathy, and a commitment to growth- learning from every experience while bringing people together. Zoey exemplifies these qualities, empowering others to become more confident versions of themselves. She has taken on numerous leadership roles both in and out of school including serving as a two-time Strait Region Co-Premier of the Nova Scotia Secondary School Students’ Association as well as a member of the Student Council and involvement with the Catapult Leadership Camp. In addition to her volunteer work, Zoey is actively involved in sports, particularly judo, where she competes at the provincial and national levels.

Zoey is committed to making a positive and lasting impact on those around her, and her leadership continues to inspire others. Congratulations, Zoey!


Dr. John Hugh Gillis Regional High School

Corbin Wyeth

Corbin is recognized for his academic performance and involvement in the school and broader community. He is currently enrolled in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program and active in school sports and the arts community, while maintaining a strong academic standard. Prior to joining the IB program, he was successful in the French Immersion Program. Corbin has been school champion of the University of Waterloo math contests for three consecutive years.

Corbin’s athletic accomplishments include participating in badminton and soccer at a competitive level and is currently a member of the school badminton team. His contributions to the arts are highlighted by more than ten years of step dancing and since middle school Corbin has shared his musical talents as a member of concert bands. Congratulations, Corbin!

Darsheen Govender

Darsheen is a distinguished student leader whose resilience, initiative and commitment to service set him apart within his school and community. Strengthened by the experience of a pivotal transition to Nova Scotia, he has developed remarkable maturity and discipline. A dedicated International Baccalaureate student, Darsheen balances academic excellence with meaningful leadership, serving as Yearbook Co-President and volunteering at a local physician’s practice.

A passionate cricketer, Darsheen made the significant commitment of travelling to Halifax twice a week to compete in the nearest club. To give others the opportunity locally, he recently arranged the first organized cricket initiative in Antigonish, creating access to the sport in a non-traditional region. Often reflective and observant, Darsheen leads with quiet intention and depth, bringing a steady presence to the role he undertakes. He is driven by perseverance and vision, transforming his own challenges into opportunities. Congratulations, Darsheen!

East Antigonish Education Centre/Academy

Brooklynn Dort

Brooklynn is a student who is passionate about her studies and consistently strives to grow and excel academically. Known for her caring and kind nature, Brooklyn is committed to helping others and making a positive impact in school and in the community. As an ambassador with the Nova Scotia International Student Program (NSISP), she welcomes new students, leads school tours, and helps international students feel confident and included as part of the school community.

Brooklyn has attended numerous leadership conferences, including the Nova Scotia Secondary School Students’ Association and has represented her school at the NSISP Ambassador Conference. She also volunteers in her community through initiatives such as litter clean-ups, demonstrating her dedication to service and leadership. Through her academic pursuits and community involvement, Brooklynn shows empathy and initiative while fostering a supportive and inclusive environment. Her future goals include a nursing career followed by studying medicine to become a doctor specializing in dermatology, with the goal of continuing to help others. Congratulations, Brooklyn!

Veronica Boyle

Veronica is a well-rounded student recognized for her academic excellence, leadership, and community involvement. Maintaining the highest academic average for four consecutive years, she consistently strives to reach her full potential. Beyond the classroom, Veronica participates in a range of school sports and extracurricular activities, including track and field, cross country, hockey, and volleyball, where she has earned awards such as Most Valuable Player, the 3D Award and Most Improved Player.

Veronica is committed to giving back to her community through volunteer work with local organizations, including Challenger Baseball, where she supports individuals with disabilities in a fun, safe, and inclusive environment. She has also assisted with community dinners and visited the Heatherton Group Home to connect with residents. Through her involvement in both school and community, she demonstrates strong leadership and a genuine commitment to making a difference. Congratulations, Veronica!


Fanning Education Centre/Canso Academy

Abagail Myatt

Abagail is a motivated and compassionate student who strives to do well in all her academic pursuits. She demonstrates a strong commitment to learning, consistently putting in the effort needed to succeed and grow. Beyond the classroom, Abagail is an active volunteer both in her school and in the wider community, always willing to lend her time to support others.

Abagail is a dedicated member of Jack.org and the Nova Scotia Secondary School Students’ Association, where she contributes to initiatives that promote student well-being and leadership. Abagail is also a committed volunteer at her local church, further reflecting her caring and community-minded nature. Through her involvement and positive attitude, Abagail makes a meaningful impact on those around her. Emily George

Emily is an active and dedicated volunteer who makes a meaningful impact both in her school and the wider community. She is a proud member of Jack.org and the Nova Scotia Secondary School Students’ Association, where she contributes her voice to initiatives that support youth well-being and student leadership. Emily has a strong passion for volleyball, a sport that has taught her valuable life skills such as teamwork, resilience, discipline, and effective communication. These experiences have shaped her into a confident and collaborative individual.

In addition to her extracurricular involvement, Emily excels in all her academic courses, consistently demonstrating a strong work ethic and a commitment to learning. She balances her studies, athletics, and volunteer work with determination and enthusiasm. Inverness Education Centre/Academy

Murdock Robert MacDonald MacLean

Murdock is a dedicated and community-minded student demonstrating high academic performance and qualities of leadership and service. Academically, he has received Gold academic honours since Grade 7 and regularly medals in the regional Science Fair. Murdock will also attend the prestigious Shad Canada science and entrepreneurship program this summer. He has been member of Student Council since Grade 8 and currently holds the position of Co-President. Murdock is also involved in school sports and his athletic ability shines as a member of the table tennis and badminton teams, which he has participated in since Grade 8.

Murdock is a well-rounded and ambitious student. While balancing academics, sport and student council activities, Murdoch serves on the Community Health Board for Inverness County, and volunteers for the school’s Breakfast Program. Congratulations, Murdock!

Aurora Elle MacLean

Aurora is a hard-working student who combines ambition and ability while balancing school, work, volunteering, and sport. She is a strong student academically and has received Gold academic honours since Grade 7. Aurora balances her strong academic record, with a solid work ethic.

Aurora competes in high school volleyball, softball, and rugby. She is also an important player with the U17 Tier 1 Inverness Raiders volleyball team, as well as a member of the U18 Quad County Whitecaps hockey team. Aurora works part-time at both Caper Gym and Fitness and The Central Shop in Inverness and volunteers during Scotsville Days each summer. Congratulations, Aurora!

Richmond Education Centre /Academy

Denis Hamet

Denis is a hardworking and well-rounded student who demonstrates strong discipline and humility. As an international student with the Nova Scotia International Student Program, he excels academically while completing dual studies in both Nova Scotia and Czech programming, and actively contributes to his school and local communities.

Denis serves as assistant captain of the school’s hockey team, mentors younger students through involvement in GuysWork and participates in programs supporting students with diverse needs. He believes true success is measured not only by grades but by the ability to lead, help others, and overcome challenges. Congratulations, Denis!

Maya MacLean

Maya is a dedicated student who consistently demonstrates a strong commitment to her academic excellence and personal growth. Her involvement in the school community includes softball and serving as a member of the Leadership, Hockey, Wellness, and IWK Fundraising Committees. In her community, Maya volunteers at local festivals, the St. Peter’s Fire Department open house and takes part in community cleanups highlighting her leadership and advocacy for the protection of the environment.

Maya is known for her positive attitude towards learning and her willingness to support and encourage those around her. She values responsibility, kindness, perseverance, and strives to demonstrate these qualities both inside and outside of school. Congratulations, Maya!

St Mary’s Education Centre/Academy

Breanna Hape

Breanna is a dedicated Grade 11 student recognized for her leadership, academic excellence, and commitment to her school community. She consistently demonstrates a strong work ethic and a passion for learning. Breanna actively participates in initiatives such as the Healthy Active Lifestyle Team (HALT), Student Leadership Group, and the school’s Caring Closet, where she supports peers through organization and outreach.

Breanna has further developed her leadership skills through participation in the Catapult Leadership Society and Girls in Leadership conferences at Mount Saint Vincent University. She aspires to become a teacher and is committed to making a positive impact on future generations. Congratulations, Breanna!

Madeline Tate-Beaver

Madeline is an exceptional Grade 11 student recognized for her outstanding academic achievement. A passionate and dedicated leader, she serves as Student Council President, where she fosters collaboration and guides meaningful initiatives within her school community. Madeline has been involved with the Nova Scotia Secondary School Students’ Association for four years, taking on multiple leadership roles and mentoring peers through skill-building programs.

An avid volleyball player and team co-captain, Madeline demonstrates strong leadership both on and off the court. She is also an ambassador with the Nova Scotia International Student Program supporting and welcoming new students. Madeline aspires to pursue a future in neuroscience or psychology and is committed to making a meaningful impact wherever her future takes her. Congratulations, Madeline!

Strait Area Education and Recreation Centre (SAERC)

Sophie Flora Langley

Sophie is a hardworking French Immersion student who is well respected for her strong academic ability and qualities of leadership and service. She contributes to and is a valuable member of numerous school committees including the Share and Care Committee, Youth Wellness Team, Techsploration Group, Diabetes Focus Group. Sophie is a member of the school’s cross-country and track teams. She is also involved in many extracurricular activities including volunteering with the Festival of the Strait; the Port Hawkesbury Antigonish Swim Team as a judge, timer and organizer; Learning Centre swim volunteer, and the Autism Nova Scotia Awareness Swims. Sophie has also generously given her time to serve at the local church. Congratulations, Sophie!

Tess Harkink

Tess is an exemplary and hardworking student who has excelled in her academic achievements while helping to make a positive difference in her school and community. She earned Gold Medals consecutively for two years while competing at the secondary level in the Nova Scotia Skills Competition in carpentry and was a member of the Nova Scotia Team who competed at the Skills Canada National Competition last year in Regina. Tess will again be a part of the Nova Scotia team competing in the upcoming the Skills Canada National Competition in Toronto.

In addition to her strong academic accomplishments, Tess is a leader with the school’s Special Olympics Unified Sports® basketball team, the Share and Care Committee and Techsploration Group. She is also a valuable member of the school basketball, soccer and track and field teams. In the community, Tess volunteers her time with the local 4-H Group hosting farm tours and assisting at the Port Hawkesbury Truck and Trailor Pulls. Congratulations, Tess!
