Twenty employees are honoured at the Strait Regional Centre for Education Strait to Excellence Awards ceremony. Ten people are seated and fourteen people are standing behind those seated. Five flags, Canada, Nova Scotia, Mi'kmaq, Acadian and African Nova Scotian, are displayed in the background.

Port Hawkesbury: The Strait Regional Centre for Education honoured twenty (20) members of staff during the Strait to Excellence Awards Ceremony held today.

The Strait to Excellence Award recognizes employees for their dedication and contributions to students and schools in the Strait Region, and for supporting student well-being, achievement and success in their school communities as members of the public education system in Nova Scotia.

“As a Strait to Excellence Award recipient, you have been singled out as someone special, someone who brings passion, enthusiasm and fresh ideas to your role, and who generously shares your knowledge with others. Your commitment, excellent work ethic and leadership have played an important role in students’ well-being, achievement and success. You have fulfilled, exceeded and excelled in your position. We are very fortunate to have you as part of the team here in the Strait Region,” said Paul Landry, Regional Executive Director of Education, during the ceremony.

Employees, groups of employees, parents/guardians, school advisory council members and students were able to submit a nomination to a Selection Committee outlining why the nominee should be considered for a Strait to Excellence Award and how the nominee has demonstrated an outstanding commitment and contribution in their respective role in one or more of the following areas: student well-being and achievement, staff success, school performance, integration of technology, health and/or safety of students and/or co-workers, cultural proficiency, commitment to students, and excellence in the workplace.

Sean Barker, Vice Principal, Antigonish Education Centre

Sean is described as an employee of excellence in every capacity of his job: personable, friendly, hard working, dedicated, and compassionate. Sean forms solid relationships with all staff and students and creates a fun, supportive environment for all.

At the drop of a hat, Sean makes himself available to help students and teachers with any issue: big and small, without question or judgement. He is committed to supporting all students of varying needs and backgrounds, going above and beyond to find creative solutions to support them. Sean excels at creating school-wide culturally responsive programs and assists with school-wide achievement tracking. Sean is an exceptional educator and leader of educators.

Kerri-Lyn Brown, Learning Support Teacher, Antigonish Education Centre

Kerri-Lyn's dedication, expertise, and collaborative spirit have profoundly impacted students, staff, and families. Her ability to support students across all tiers of intervention is remarkable, and her leadership has fostered an inclusive, supportive, and effective learning environment for all. Kerri-Lyn actively encourages and supports students who use assistive communication devices to participate in morning announcements, celebrating their achievements and showcasing their abilities. She organizes small group social activities, creating opportunities for peers to interact with students, build empathy, and recognize their unique strengths beyond the classroom setting.

Kerri-Lyn’s exceptional skills, innovative practices, and commitment to student success have created a lasting impact not only for the students she directly supports but also for the educators and families who benefit from her expertise and care.

Ann DeCoste, Janitor, East Antigonish Education Centre/Academy

As a central staff member at the school, Ann excels at her job every single day, has an outstanding work ethic and is a true professional, who continues to be dedicated to ensuring the school environment remains clean, safe, and welcoming for students, staff, and visitors.

One of Ann’s greatest strengths is her ability to adapt to the dynamic needs of a busy school environment. She approaches each day with a cheerful outlook, showing exceptional critical thinking skills and the ability to prioritize tasks efficiently. This flexibility, combined with an unwavering commitment to quality, makes Ann an invaluable member of the school team. Whether it is helping with special events, addressing maintenance concerns or responding to unexpected situations, Ann handles every challenge with professionalism and a calm demeanor.


Terry Desmond, Janitor, Antigonish Education Centre

Terry demonstrates excellence in her work, ensuring a safe, clean, and supportive environment for both students and staff. Her commitment to health and safety is evident in the care she takes in cleaning classrooms, washrooms, offices, hallways, and the cafeteria. Terry’s attention to detail helps maintain a safe environment, directly benefiting everyone in the school.

In addition to her strong work ethic, Terry is consistently positive and professional. She is always approachable, friendly, and patient, making her a valued member of the school team. Her efforts create an atmosphere that contributes to the success of students and staff. Terry’s helpfulness extends beyond her duties as she is often helping students find their belongings at the end of the day.

Margaret Gracie, School Counsellor, East Richmond Education Centre

As an educator, Margaret supports student well-being, fosters a positive school culture, and demonstrates exemplary leadership. Her contributions extend across her multiple roles in the school as a school counsellor, teacher, and teacher-in-charge. She meets regularly with classes to teach social-¬emotional skills, creates a welcoming environment by opening her office at lunchtime for students to connect, strengthening relationships and building trust.

Margaret established a popular lunchtime chess club that promotes strategic thinking and social interaction and has led an after-school cooking group that fosters teamwork, creativity, and a sense of accomplishment. Margaret’s approachable and positive demeanor inspires a culture of openness and trust among both students and staff, and her dedication is evident in every aspect of her work.

Bill Hadley, Building Operator, St. Andrew Junior School

Bill goes above and beyond in his job responsibilities to support those who are fortunate enough to work alongside him. He is caring, accepting, trustworthy and strives to do whatever he can to find the solution to challenging problems, always prioritizing the safety of others.

Bill is highly respected by his colleagues, students and staff. He is described as an invaluable member of the school community who takes immense pride in fulfilling his responsibilities. Bill sets high standards with his excellent work ethic and professionalism. Students love Bill and often find an excuse to go see Mr. Bill when they need a brain break. He always takes time to talk with students, ask them questions and involve them as much as he can in his day. Bill makes school a better place to work, grow and play.

Scott Hudson, Teacher, St. Mary’s Education Centre/Academy

As the Co-operative Education and Options and Opportunities Lead, Scott displays outstanding organizational and leadership skills and provides opportunities for students to experience a variety of career opportunities through trade show visits, partner presentations and job placements.

Scott is well respected among his colleagues and the school community. He is described as trustworthy, reliable, respected, a strong communicator and relationship builder. Scott mentors new teachers and is relied upon by staff for guidance and advice for their continued success. Scott is a lifelong learner and models the value of continued education to those around him, both as a learner and facilitator. Scott is a pillar within the school and is dedicated to promoting a positive school culture.

Susanne Kelly-MacPhie, Teacher, Antigonish Education Centre

Susanne is an exemplary educator whose passion, dedication, and leadership have made a tremendous impact on the school community. She consistently goes above and beyond in her role as teacher, leader, and colleague. Susanne is a leader in restorative practices and Active Smarter Kids initiatives at the school. Her work is deeply rooted in inclusivity and cultural responsiveness. Susanne's ability to incorporate diverse perspectives and practices in her classroom and throughout the school ensures that every student feels seen, heard, and valued.

Susanne seamlessly integrates the Seven Sacred Teachings and Ubuntu philosophy into her work. Her commitment to excellence, innovation, and community building makes her a standout educator and leader. Susanne's dedication to students, colleagues, and the school has enriched the lives of many individuals and the school community.

Chris Lumsden, Learning Support Teacher, St. Andrew Junior School

Chris works with a diverse group of students with complex learning, medical and emotional needs. He knows every student and their profile, and in his calm way, treats them with respect and dignity, always ensuring the students’ needs come first and engaging them in a variety of activities.

Chris can be seen racing up and down the hallways creating fun for students he supports. He can also be seen having one-on-one chats with students who may be struggling to attend school and observing students to assist in determining what they need to be successful. Chris treats everyone in the school community with great respect, he is non-assuming, non-judgmental, and does everything from a lens of safety, care and concern.

Jennie MacDonald, School Counsellor, Fanning Education Centre/Canso Academy

At school, Jennie is seemingly everywhere all at once and is an integral part of what makes the school such a special place. Jennie’s focus is always what is best for students and what she can do to make them healthier and happier.

Through her efforts, Jennie has gained the respect and gratitude of students and staff. She can be found welcoming guest speakers to student sessions, checking in with students who look like they could use someone to talk to and encouraging physical activity in our student body. Jennie makes time to consult and collaborate with colleagues to ensure she is doing what is best for students. Jennie’s professionalism and passion make her a valued member of the school and broader community.

Kelly MacDonald, Bus Driver, SAERC and Tamarac Education Centre

Kelly is known for being kind and patient with students and for always taking time to connect with students to make them feel safe and welcome. Whether welcoming students on the school bus or greeting students and staff in school, Kelly is known for always having a smile on his face and a quick story or joke to share.

Kelly is highly respected by his colleagues who describe him as a dependable and skilled bus driver. He is well-known by staff, students and families for his helpful ways, friendliness, caring nature and pleasant demeanor. Kelly takes great pride in ensuring the safe transportation of students to school and always puts the safety of students first.

Pauline MacDonald, Janitor, Bayview Education Centre

Pauline exemplifies excellence in her role, consistently going above and beyond in her responsibilities. She performs her cleaning duties with precision and care, prioritizing the health and safety of students and staff, making the school a safer and healthier place for everyone.

Pauline's dedication extends beyond cleaning to contributing to the school community in many impactful ways: she is a key organizer of the school's annual Remembrance Day Ceremony and participates in the school wreath fundraiser ensuring their success. Pauline is an active member of the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee and the School Advisory Council, contributing her insight and commitment to enhancing the school environment. Her contributions significantly enhance the school community, and her commitment to excellence makes her a deserving recipient of this prestigious award.

Deanna MacGillivray, Teacher Assistant, Chedabucto Education Centre/ Guysborough Academy

Deanna’s dedication to supporting students with additional needs has been inspirational. The well-being of students has always been her number one priority. Deanna’s calm and kind demeanour makes her a favorite with students as they recognize her as a trusted person who will help them through social/emotional learning needs as well as classwork.

Deanna goes above and beyond in her role and helps to make all students feel comfortable, safe and heard. She celebrates their successes, listens to their concerns and is conscientious about sharing information with their teachers to champion their learning. Deanna’s observations have been valuable in helping to improve programming for students and she has a willingness to try new ideas and strategies with students to help them grow.

Shelley MacLean, Student Services Consultant, Programs and Student Services Department

Shelley has a passion for seeing students succeed in all aspects of programming. She works closely with school staff to support complex student needs and addresses every problem with a solution-oriented mindset. Shelley is a model team player always seeking collaborative opportunities on topics of concern. She has great communication skills and a witty sense of humour that allow her to keep complicated situations positive.

Shelley has a gift for developing different strategies outside of the norm that allow students to be the best they can be. She is an exceptional facilitator of professional learning for all employee groups and plans meaningful activities incorporating interaction, technology, movement, and relaxation activities as part of her delivery that leave a long-lasting impression on participants.

Heather Savoury, Lead Early Childhood Educator, Tamarac Education Centre

Heather cares deeply about others and uses her humour and patience to support children and staff. She greets every student with a smile, a wave, a hug, and kindness. Heather encourages others to use their talents and skills and creates a positive environment, motivating others to give children the most enriching of days. Heather talks, listens, helps, and nurtures children as they develop socially.

Heather is constantly trying to learn and improve her practice. She is committed to developing culturally responsive learning spaces for children. She helps children learn language, routines, and foster friendships and makes everyone feel heard and seen. Heather shares in their concerns, their triumphs, their laughter, and their everyday lives.

Eryn Sinclair, Reading Recovery Teacher Leader, Programs and Student Services Department

Eryn demonstrates an unwavering commitment to student success by utilizing innovative teaching methods tailored to individual student needs. She exhibits exceptional patience, empathy and understanding for all learners. Eryn has a collaborative spirit, working closely with teachers and parents and is dedicated to ongoing professional development which enhances student success.

Under Eryn’s guidance, students who struggle to read blossom into confident, enthusiastic learners. Eryn has a strong ability to connect with students on a personal level, create lesson plans that make reading fun and engaging, a willingness to go above and beyond for each child's success and a passion for Reading Recovery that inspires students and colleagues alike. Students' faces light up with pride as they become more confident readers.

Bhreagh Snair, Learning Support Teacher, Tamarac Education Centre

Bhreagh begins every morning outside greeting students, staff and parents as they arrive. This allows her to have conversations with parents, do check-ins with students and determine programming shifts as needed. Students and parents look forward to seeing her outside and starting each day on a positive note.

Bhreagh is an invaluable member of the student services team. She can be counted on to consult on programming, organize programs such as the school swim program, and create schedules for Teacher Assistants. Bhreagh believes in a collaborative approach to programming. She consults regularly with teachers to determine next steps, look for resources, and share ideas. Bhreagh is constantly looking for ways to improve her practice and support students in the most effective ways.

Annamarie Talbot, Coordinator of Student Services, Programs and Student Services Department

Regardless of the task or initiative Annamarie takes on, she does so with passion and enthusiasm. There is never any task too small or too large and with her focus, determination, high energy, strong organizational and inter-personal skills, success is met.

Annamarie always has student interests at the heart of everything she does, assisting teachers, school administration and parents to support complex situations and overcome barriers so a truly inclusive education is in place. Annamarie sees positiveness and potential in everyone, staff and students alike, and knows they can achieve success with the proper supports. She truly believes in inclusion, equity and diversity, which is evident in everything she does.

Lindsay Watson, SchoolsPlus Community Outreach Worker, Programs and Student Services Department

Lindsay shows great commitment to supporting student well-being and safety. Her leadership with Gender and Sexuality Alliances (GSAs) and her dedication to student advocacy reflect the vision of a school community where every student feels valued, supported, and safe. Lindsay has an excellent ability to build authentic and trusting relationships. Her mentorship has made her a reliable and caring presence, allowing Lindsay to effectively guide and support students on a daily basis.

Lindsay’s passion for the Kids in the Know program has been instrumental in ensuring students receive the knowledge they need to make informed decisions and grow with confidence. Lindsay is invaluable to school staff and the SchoolsPlus team. Her dedication and daily efforts have a positive and meaningful impact on students.

Carolyn Webber, Pre-primary Program Lead, Programs and Student Services Department

Carolyn’s unwavering dedication to early childhood education, commitment to student well-being and achievement, and leadership in fostering a culturally responsive learning environment make her a model educator whose influence positively impacts students, colleagues, and the broader region.

Carolyn’s respect for each child’s individuality is evident in her play-based, relationship-centered approach, where she encourages and supports staff to provide learning environments that are designed to reflect and honor the lived experiences of students. As a mentor and guide, Carolyn is a collaborative leader who “rolls up her sleeves” and models exemplary practices. Whether she’s involved in activities as playful as shaving cream art or messy puddle play, Carolyn leads by example and consistently prioritizes what is best for young learners.
