News Release: Congratulations to the SRCE Lieutenant Governor’s Education Medal Recipients 2023

The Honourable Arthur J. LeBlanc, ONS, QC, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, annually presents the Lieutenant Governor’s Education Medal to selected Grade 11 students who have demonstrated qualities of leadership and service in the school and community; and commendable performance in the courses in which they are enrolled.

“I extend congratulations to the nineteen (19) students in the Strait Regional Centre for Education who have been named recipients of the 2022-2023 Nova Scotia Lieutenant Governor’s Education Medal. Their many achievements are truly impressive, and this Medal is a well-deserved recognition of their significant accomplishments. Their determination in achieving their goals and commitment to serving their communities is inspiring. All of us in the Strait Regional Centre for Education are very proud of them.

I also recognize with appreciation the support provided by the recipients’ families and teachers in instilling the value of service to others in students’ hearts and minds. The Lieutenant Governor’s Education Medal recipients are our leaders of today and tomorrow,” said Paul Landry, Regional Executive Director for the Strait Regional Centre for Education.

At a ceremony held at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre this afternoon, The Honourable Arthur J. LeBlanc, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, presented the Lieutenant Governor’s Education Medal to the following 2022-2023 SRCE recipients:

Cape Breton Highlands Education Centre/Academy

Ciaran MacDonald

Ciaran is a Grade 11 French Immersion student at Cape Breton Highlands Education Centre/ Academy who excels academically and is extremely active in his school and community. Ciaran is a Nova Scotia International Student Ambassador leader, Healthy Relationships for Youth facilitator, Student Council representative, performer with the Drama Club with a significant role in the technical, sound and set design of performances, and a statistician for the Senior Girls basketball team. Ciaran runs cross country, plays Senior Boys volleyball, table tennis, and track and field. He is recognized for his enthusiasm, support of his teammates and sportsmanship. In his community, he is dedicated to wildlife preservation initiatives. Congratulations, Ciaran!

Rori Timmons

Rori is a hardworking Grade 11 student at Cape Breton Highlands Education Centre/Academy who maintains high academic standards and is very active in her school and community. Rori is an Executive member of Student Council, Grade 11 Yearbook Committee editor, devoted member of the Drama Club and the Senior Girls volleyball team, has been a member of the cross country and girls softball teams in past years. Rori is also the voice of Cape Breton Highlands Education Centre/Academy morning announcements. Outside of school, Rori is Regimental Sergeant Major of the 2940 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps where her leadership shines and has been recognized for prestigious cadet leadership awards. Congratulations, Rori!

Chedabucto Education Centre/Guysborough Academy

Lindsay Connolly

Lindsay is a strong and diligent student who leads by example. She is a conscientious student who is able to achieve academic success while being actively involved in her school and community. Linday’s dedication to her studies has been recognized with various academic achievement awards, including the Shelley Haynes Memorial Award for all around Grade 10 student. She balances school, babysitting, and many extra-curricular activities. Lindsay has been active in her school and community for many years helping with community functions in Guysborough Intervale including the Guysborough Come Home Days, Guysborough County United Minor Soccer program and JAGAS volleyball. She has participated in school sports at the junior and high school levels. Throughout her athletic career, Lindsay has received awards for Most Valuable Player, Most Improved Player, and the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation Good Sport Award. Lindsay is a member of the Stoirm Volleyball Club. Last year, she was an integral part of the U16 team that won the provincial volleyball title. Congratulations, Lindsay!

Luca Favaro

Luca has successfully balanced academic achievement with school and community involvement and other varied interests to establish himself as a dedicated student. Luca plays multiple instruments in the school band and drums professionally. He deeply enjoys physics and has a keen interest in all things math and science. Luca is active with the Student Council as Music Technician Advisor, serves as a DJ for dances, and volunteers as sound technician for numerous community events. He co-founded a Dungeons and Dragons chapter, writes screenplays, studies cinema, reads classic fiction and bakes cookies for church lunches. Luca demonstrates strong time management skills to make the most of each day. The name Luca in Italian means "light" and that is what he brings to those around him, through his school life, volunteerism, friendships, and his art. Congratulations Luca!

Dalbrae Academy

Rhylyn MacInnis

Rhylyn is a hardworking and compassionate student who has successfully balanced academic achievement and community involvement. In school, Rhylyn enjoys science, something she wishes to pursue, and many forms of art, including acting, painting, woodworking, and music. She also belonged to several school committees and groups such as Techsploration, Yearbook, Healthy Relationships for Youth and Student Council. Rhylyn loves Gaelic class, learning step dancing, and square dancing, playing the fiddle and was recently able to be part of a class trip to Ireland. She volunteers in her home community of Whycocomagh where she loves to be a part of its culture, helping with several festivals and organizations and as a paint instructor for children. Having generations of her family around her throughout her life, Rhylyn was able to learn valuable life lessons and learned much about her heritage. Congratulations, Rhylyn!

Marrissa Rouse

Marrissa is a well-rounded student who has worked hard for all her achievements. She is a born leader with many skills including a strong work ethic, reliability, and being a team player. Marrissa strives for perfection in everything she does, regardless of the hurdles she faces. She is very athletic and plays several sports including soccer, volleyball, softball, track and field, basketball, and badminton.  Marrissa’s hobbies include singing at local jam sessions, playing club volleyball and recently she has taken up diamond art. She is a member of the Nova Scotia Secondary School Association, Catapult Leadership Society and is a proud Options and Opportunities student. Marrissa’s volunteer activities include helping with several community festivals and as an assistant volleyball coach. Congratulations, Marrissa!

Dr. John Hugh Gillis Regional High School

Georgia Armsworthy

Georgia has achieved an impressive academic record as a Grade 11 student. In school, she is a Concert and Stage band member playing in various services and festivals. Georgia won the Outstanding 1st Year Player in 2021. She is also a member of the school Robotics and Chess Clubs as well as a member of Techsploration. Outside of school, Georgia is involved in 4H, helps with the Fall Fair and at the Simply Ducky Farm. She has volunteered with Canadian Association for Community Living fundraisers, as well as caroling at the R.K. MacDonald Nursing Home. In addition, she currently works part time at a local business focusing on customer service. Congratulations, Georgia!

Lily MacLean

Lily has achieved an impressive academic standing as a Grade 11 student. She has made a positive impact in Antigonish opening her own business, Lily’s Flowers, through which she has made donations to the Canadian Association for Community Living, Ewing Sarcoma, Every Child Matters and to local families in need. Lily has been a volunteer at Special Olympics, the Highland Games, and various fundraising events at St. Martha’s Hospital. She has also mentored teammates in Antigonish PHAST swimming club. Lily is determined, persistent and adaptable, ready to face obstacles and adversities in life. Congratulations, Lily!

East Antigonish Education Centre/Academy

Cora Carr

Cora is a hardworking, ambitious student who consistently achieves high academic standing. She is involved within the school community and is a dedicated volunteer. Cora received the Most Outstanding Student in Grade 9 and the highest academic average in Grade 10. She is currently the President of Student Council, has volunteered at Holiday concerts and in the school library during book fairs. Cora is also a Nova Scotia International Student Program (NSISP) Ambassador; and volunteers to help our International students when they come to Canada and our school. Congratulations, Cora!

Ellie DeCoste

Ellie is an optimistic, active leader within the school community. Ellie consistently has been on the honor roll and strives to continue to improve academically. She is a Nova Scotia International Student Program (NSISP) Ambassador, a member of the Nova Scotia Secondary School Students’ Association (NSSSA) and a member of Student Council. Ellie volunteers within the school community, helping in the school library and at sports banquets. Ellie also received the Robin Mackinnon Award, which is an award given to a student who is determined, kind, respectful and a good role model in the classroom. Congratulations, Ellie! 

Fanning Education Centre/Canso Academy

Peyton Rhynold

Peyton is an outstanding, positive role model in our school and community.  She is passionate about her academics and encourages others to strive for excellence as they pursue their goals.  Peyton sets high academic standards and works diligently to meet and exceed her goals. Always responsive to her peers, Peyton dedicates her time to building and maintaining positive relationships with students of all ages through her work with our Healthy Relationships for Youth Group, Jack.org and Gender Sexuality Alliance.  Peyton’s drive to promote acceptance, kindness, and respect for all is to be commended and continues to inspire those around her. Congratulations, Peyton!

Inverness Education Centre/Academy

Caragh Kennedy

Caragh’s diligence and commitment to excellence as a student is evident in her academic and athletic achievements. She has merited Gold academic standing throughout middle and high school. Caragh was awarded Silver in Health Sciences at the Strait Regional Science Fair in 2016, and Best Visual Presentation in 2018. She is an active participant in her classes, maintaining a high average and consistently strives to extend her learning and understanding. Caragh’s communication skills are exemplary, she excels in thinking critically and applying her learning. Her extra-curricular involvement includes membership in the school band and the Catapult Leadership Society of Nova Scotia. Caragh has played on the school’s golf, volleyball, soccer, hockey, basketball, badminton, table tennis, track and field, and softball teams, and served as the Assistant Captain for the hockey team this year. She has won numerous sports awards for her involvement, including a Good Sport Award. In all Caragh’s athletic endeavours, she demonstrates strong dedication to achievement and to her teammates. Caragh also served her school and community in many volunteer capacities including Secretary of the Student Council, a Healthy Relationships for Youth Facilitator and at Celtic Colours concerts. She has shared her musical talents by performing at a variety of school and community events, including Remembrance Day and Graduation Ceremonies, the annual Tribute to Lilith Fair concert, church functions, and local concerts. Caragh demonstrated responsibility and a strong work ethic by working as a caddie at Cabot Links and as a musical performer. Caragh’s ability to balance her many commitments while maintaining high personal standards of achievement and a strong community spirit are exceptional. Congratulations, Caragh!

Taylor MacQuarrie

Taylor has combined excellent academic achievement with impressive school, community, and athletic involvement. Taylor’s academic achievements earned her gold academic pins in Grades 9 and 10, and has competed at the Strait Regional Science Fair. She willingly offers academic support to classmates. Taylor’s perseverance, dedication to excellence, and responsible and cooperative character has contributed to her success. Her athletic participation spans a variety of sports, including soccer, basketball, hockey, badminton, and softball; she served as Assistant Captain of the hockey team this year. As an athlete, Taylor has demonstrated the ability to maintain level-headedness under pressure; she is supportive to her teammates, works hard, and does not give up when faced with challenges. She has also been a member of the school band and the Gender Sexuality Alliance. As the current Treasurer for Student Council, Taylor has helped to plan and organize events, and has been responsible for various financial duties. Taylor’s strong work ethic, determination, and leadership qualities shine in her athletic and extra-curricular pursuits. Taylor has volunteered at various events in her school including Student Council activities and fundraising for school sports, always presenting herself with professionalism and personability. She has also volunteered in her community at the Inverness Racetrack, the Inverness Information Centre, the Inverness Arena and the annual Celtic Colours concert.  Her reliability, willingness to help, and ease in interacting with the public have made her an asset in these roles. Richmond Education Centre/Academy

Kaitlin Burke

Kaitlin is a very dedicated and high achieving student who plans to attend university after graduation.  She has successfully balanced academic achievement along with school and community involvement to establish herself as a committed student and leader.  As an athlete, Kaitlin played on the school volleyball, basketball, and soccer teams. She serves on several school committees including the Leadership Committee and the Hockey Committee.  Kaitlin is also an International School Ambassador and is on the Richmond Education Centre/Academy work crew.  Kaitlin is also very involved in her community and volunteers her time with the St. Peter’s Pirate Days, Swim the Canal, Festival of Trees, Make-a-Wish Foundation to name a few.

Caleb Boudreau

Caleb is a conscientious student who maintains a high academic average and demonstrates a strong commitment to his school and broader community.  He volunteers at school, helping with the Leadership Committee and the Richmond Education Centre/Academy work crew. He is dedicated to helping in his community whenever possible. Caleb volunteers his time with his church, the MacAskill Museum, the Festival of Trees, and several other events during the Nicolas Denys Days, such as the Poker Run, the Village Parade, and the MacAskill Museum auction. He enjoys spending time with his family and tubing on the Bras d’Or Lakes with his friends during the summer months. Congratulations, Caleb!

St. Mary’s Education Centre/Academy

Malcolm Pye

Malcolm is an outgoing student with a strong work ethic. He is consistently on the Principal’s List with Excellence and has received the Kadray Trophy which is awarded to the male senior high student with the highest academic ranking. Malcolm is currently co-chair of the Student Council where he values student voice and is working hard to make the school year memorable and positive experience for all students. Malcolm is not only a leader in school, but also in his community, often lending a helping hand when needed. His future plans include exploring a career as a Marine Engineer with the Canadian Coast Guard. Congratulations, Malcolm!

Aubrey (Sadie) Tate-Beaver

Aubrey (Sadie) is a very dedicated and creative student. Sadie is interested in the environmental sustainability concept of Reduce Reuse Recycle, often working on projects to give new life to thrown away objects. This passion will serve her well as she intends to pursue a career in Sustainable Engineering. Sadie is a member of the U18 Stoirm volleyball team and the Highland Muay Thai Club where she works hard at being active and honing her athletic skills. Sadie is co-chair of the Student Council, working hard to create change. She was instrumental in applying for grants to create a lounge area in the school for students to enjoy. Congratulations, Sadie!

Strait Area Education Recreation Centre (SAERC)

Alexis Chisholm-Beaton

Alexis is a very skilled French Immersion student at SAERC who demonstrates high academic achievement and qualities of leadership and service in the school and community. She has found time to serve on the Share and Care and Safe Grad Committees, as a Healthy Relationships for Youth facilitator, took part in Techsploration, and participates on the cross country and track and field teams. She is an excellent athlete, playing defense for the Cape Breton Lynx U18 AAA Major Midget Hockey Team. Alexis is involved in many extra-curricular activities, some of which include serving at the annual Senior’s Christmas Dinner, volunteering for Pride Month, The Mi’kmaq Elder Breakfast Gathering and Relay for Life Events, helping organize the 2022 Girls Empowerment Mentorship March, and participating in the annual Port Hawkesbury community clean-up. Congratulations, Alexis!

Olivia Langley

Olivia consistently demonstrates high academic achievement at SAERC. In addition to her strong academic record as a French Immersion student, she is also a valuable member of many committees and teams, including Share and Care and Safe Grad Committees, as a Healthy Relationships for Youth facilitator, participant in Techsploration, and a member of the cross country and track and field teams.  In the community, Olivia is the current Assistant Coach for the Port Hawkesbury Antigonish Swim Team, and volunteers as an official during swim meets. As well as being an excellent competitive swimmer, Olivia instructs a water awareness program with Autism Nova Scotia. She is an active member of St. Mark’s United Church and has volunteered for many of their recent initiatives. Congratulations, Olivia!
