Core French

As part of the French programming of the SRCE, we offer Core French from Grades 4-9 with the option (pending interest) taking Core French 10-12. The Nova Scotia Virtual School (NSVS) now offers Core French 10 and will be offering Core French 11 and 12 for those students looking to continue their learning in French with the option of taking the courses online.

Intensive French

Intensive French is only offered at St. Andrew Junior School located in Antigonish to students in Grade 6. An intense language arts/literacy-based approach to teaching French as a second language that complements the Core French Program at the Grade 6 level.  Students learn French for three to four consecutive hours per day for five months, usually from Sept. until the end of January. (February-end of June)

Early Immersion

French Immersion provides students with the opportunity to follow most of the subjects in French while achieving the same curriculum expectations. 

The entry point for French Immersion starts in Grade primary. We offer French Immersion from in the following schools:

Grade 12 students have the option to take an Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI).

What is OPI?

OPI is an oral proficiency interview in your additional language. It is a certification of French oral  language abilities and is coordinated by the Regional Centres for Education and supported by the Nova  Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

OPI has four levels: Basic (A1-A2), Intermediate (B1), Advanced(B2) and Superior (C1) – Level A  represents beginner abilities in French, Level B represents independent abilities, and Level C represents  proficient abilities. 

The OPI measures a student’s ability to speak and communicate orally in French.
