Accessibility Requirements

In September 2018, Government released Access by Design 2030, which is a framework that supports the Accessibility Act of Nova Scotia and provides a provincial roadmap for preventing and removing barriers in the built environment, education, employment, transportation, information and communication, and goods and services.

Under the Accessibility Act, the Accessibility Advisory Board makes recommendations to the Minister of Justice on a standard in education. In March 2019, the Accessibility Advisory Board established an Education Standard Development Committee to assist them with this work. The Accessibility Advisory Board established that the scope of the recommendations would include public and private early years, elementary, secondary, and post-secondary education, including the Nova Scotia School for Adult Learning.

For guidance and assistance in meeting Nova Scotia’s Accessibility legislation, and optimizing accessibility in playgrounds and outdoor spaces, please refer to the Interim Accessibility Guidelines for Indoor and Outdoor Spaces, Nova Scotia Accessibility Directorate, April 2020.

Schools are eligible for funding under the Community Accessibility Program, based on the criteria outlined in the Community Accessibility Program Guidelines (February 2024). For further information and the application for funding, contact the Communities, Culture, Tourism, and Heritage Coordinator in the region.
